Beasts, monsters, and all statted creatures in the core bools should already have those size bonuses applied.

Nice! I hope you guys have fun! You're right- the relationship of copper to silver isn't explicit anywhere in the PG. I'll have to fix that! For reference, 10 copper = 1 silver.

You always take the highest of the multiple dice rolls for any roll and add your modifiers. Therefore, a high Attribute gives you a much higher chance of getting a high roll up to 20. Skill and any situational modifiers are how you can get rolls in excess of 20. The exception to this is if you have the Demigod Background Trait (which we will use more heavily in the Age of Antiquity sourcebook). With that, your natural 20s explode, so if you roll a 20 on your Attribute roll, you roll it again and add 20 to the result.

We're actually in the midst of quite a bit of research about Asian culture and technology during the period the FHaFG is set- I have to admit, it is a bit of a weak spot for me, but Charles and a few other folks are getting material together for The East expansion while I'm working on Age of Sails. On the point of magic- I was considering doing a small "The Grand Tourney"-sized book to supplement magic. Kind of a "Book of Arcana" kind of thing discussing period flavors of magicians with suggestions on how to stat them and what kinds of things they can do. We've been play testing for the Age of Sails and my fiancé is playing a Haitian Voodoo priestess. The flavors that she has brought to the table are phenomenal- she has a little book filled with which loa will talk to her on which days, what their favorite colors are, what kinds of liquors and offerings they like, etc. We actually have a couple of magical pirates in that group, which has been a blast. When they get together and work in concert using Ritual Magic they work as a Power 7 circle! So suuuuuppppper powerful if given the time and materials for ritual. THey recently took down a British Navy brigantine with little more than magic and good planning! And thank you for the kind words- Charles and I worked really long and hard when we created this game to make magic 'magical' while still affording power to melee characters. I can't even remember all the nights we debated game balance! It has been an honor and a joy to bring this game to the community.

Sounds like fun! That being said, very soon we are putting out a small digital release titled The Grand Tourney. It will be able to be played as a stand-alone or as a part of a larger Story campaign. But the idea is this- all Players are participating knights in a High Middle Ages tournament. We're going to have rules for non-lethal (mostly) Grand Melee, Melee competitions, jousting, unnarmed/wrestling competitions, and archery! The Grand Tourney will also feature dozens of pre-made knights from circa AD 1425, complete with backstories, Traits, Flaws, Talents, etc. OR Players can create their own characters to use in the competitions. Players will compete in the various competitions in PvP (or, if preferred PvE) matches with the goal being to win the overall tourney.

Sounds like you have a good cast of characters started and hook to get everyone working together. What year are you thinking? Are all of the characters going to be English or Anglo-Saxon? This scenario would be very easy to play out at anytime during the Viking Age. There were so many skirmishes and battles between the Anglo-Saxons and Danes that it should be pretty easy to pin the events to a specific period.

Yeah- maybe if it a survival situation, but otherwise let them have some seax, swords, or at least a couple of martial weapons. Or at least a way to obtain them early on. That's not to say that wouldn't be fun! Now if you gave them Rare Steel hand axes, that would be a different story!

And doesn't make you use Hand-to-Hand Skill as opposed to your Common Weapons Skill! So it comes to an economy of Skill points allocated and damage types. If an object or opponent is resistant to bludgeoning damage, that hand axe comes in, well, handy. Note that when we're talking about an "Axe" we're also talking about your typical tool axes- hand axes, cooper's axe, wood axe, etc. It is a tool most often found with a peasant militia as opposed to a force going to war. A Norse raider might have one as a side arm or a ranged weapon, but the axe that they are going to reach for most often in a melee is their Daneaxe or Greataxe. We thought about damage from unarmed being reduced by one stage after damage was resolved, but having the attack deal a Stun Point, but that seemed a bit "nerfed." We wanted to make using your fists in addition to your weaponry a viable attack for Talents like Locked Blades (in the Chronicler's Guide). If you want to downplay unarmed combat a bit, I would suggest that you use that as a house rule.

ALL rolls in this system use the same general formula: roll a number of dice equal to a single Attribute that is best suited to the task. Take the highest roll. Then add and applicable Skill bonus, Talent bonus, circumstantial mod., etc. as a bonus. The defender rolls using a number of dice equal to their Vitality (if they want to soak it) or their Finesse (to dodge) using their total Defense bonus (Armor + modifiers) to their roll. The difference determines the outcomes.

For a straight unarmed attack (not a grapple/wrestle attempt), you'll roll Strength Attribute # of dice (3d20 for a Strength 3, take the highest result) PLUS your Hand-to-Hand Skill against the Defense roll of your opponent. The difference between the two rolls will determine the outcome (if defender wins, the blow is soaked or dodged, if the attacker wins, the difference determines the stages of success). Say you rolled 10 better than than the defender- that means you dealt 3 stages of damage. The point of a weapon that doesn't give you a bonus is YOU HAVE A WEAPON. That means you can use Common, Martial, or Heavy Weapons Skills (as opposed to Hand-to-Hand) and can use that weapon's special properties. Additionally, Martial Weapons deal 1 extra stage of damage on a hit and Heavy Weapons deal 2 extra stages on a successful hit. For instance, having a Sap means that if you would have dealt 2 stages of damage on an unarmed attack, you'll instead have dealt 2 stages PLUS 2 Stun Points. Having an Iron Bearded Axe means that when you hit for one base stage, you'll inflict two stages and can use it to trip your opponent OR when you use a Common Steel Greatsword you'll have a 10' reach and deal two extra stages on a successful hit. The usefulness of Common Weapons comes down to two things: range and/or special properties.

What I generally encourage people to do is to start with what race you playing (consider the pros/cons to playing non-humans carefully!). Then take your concept for the character that you want to play and then flesh it out (backstory, social and political context, mannerisms, etc.) with Traits and Flaws. Flaws can award up to 10 Build Points and Traits spend them but give you other perks (like Noble title). Then move on to your Attributes, Skills, and Talents. This is the game statistic "core" of your character. Attributes get you multiple dice to roll, so a better chance of a high roll, but Skills are the modifiers, so SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT if you want rolls higher than 20. Use the tables in the PG to track how many points you've spent as you go. For Attributes, you get a 1 for freebies and advance from there (as long as you didn't take flaws that reduce them at character creation). Skills start at 0 and advance. Languages other than your one native spoken language cost 1 BP each to learn or write. Once that is all done, spend your BP on the Wealth you want to start with so you know what your starting equipment, income, and retainers look like. I give a play-by-play example of building a character as soon as Con Nooga is over- we're super busy this weekend promoting the game and running the Knight's Tourney.
